Guru’s 5 Favorite Golf Instruction Books

Posted onDecember 23, 2024July 7, 2025 Ben Hogan, best golf books, best golf instruction books, classic golf instruction books, golf instruction, golf instruction books, great golf books

To be abundantly clear, I’m not some obnoxious, blowhard mid-handicapper doling out unsolicited golf instruction advice.

That said, these five timeless classics have been a great source of wisdom for me in my constant struggle to stay on top of my game.

Hope these five can help you as well:

1. Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf

This Ben Hogan masterpiece is absolute gold and I’ve been referencing it for decades. First published in 1957, this book is a must  for golfers who want to master the fundamentals. Hogan breaks the game into five essential lessons, focusing on grip, stance, posture, and swing mechanics. With clear illustrations and timeless advice, it’s a must-read for beginners and seasoned players alike.

2. Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf

Harvey Penick’s “Little Red Book” is a treasure trove of golf wisdom, packed with anecdotes and practical advice. Written in a simple, easy-to-understand conversational tone, this book captures Penick’s insights from decades of teaching. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or a weekend warrior, Penick’s lessons will help you develop a deeper understanding of the game.

3. The Plane Truth for Golfers by Jim Hardy

Jim Hardy simplifies one of the most complex aspects of golf: the swing plane. He divides swings into two categories—one-plane and two-plane—and provides guidance tailored to each type. This book’s clarity and focus on swing mechanics make it an excellent resource for players looking to refine their technique.

4. Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus

As one of the greatest golfers of all time, Jack Nicklaus shares his insights and advice in “Golf My Way.” This book covers everything from the mental game to short-game techniques and full-swing mechanics. With guidance grounded in decades of success on the course, Nicklaus offers readers a comprehensive guide to improving their play. If you can’t take advice from an 18 time Major Champion, then you’ve got some serious problems, brotha.

5. Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect

While I’m not a club thrower, I tend to hit the swing oil quickly if things go south. Bob Rotella’s classic book is about improving your attitude and enjoying the game. It’s amazing how much better you play when you have the right mind set. Rotella offers a wide variety of solutions to up your mental game. His words have contributed greatly to me not hitting the sauce too early.

While video analysis, simulator training screens and various aids continue to evolve, these timeless books offer core principles that are never outdated.
