Let’s get ready to rumble!
Match III – Champions for Change is coming Friday, November 27th. This time it’s pairing Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley against Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning.
The event will get going at 3 p.m. ET at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Arizona, a par 72, cactus-dotted, desert-style private course designed by Jay Moorish that’s surrounded by the Santa Catalina Mountains.
Knowing he’s got Philly Mick carrying him around the course, Sir Charles is already trash talking and guaranteeing a victory.
Barkley recently told Golfweek: “Capital One’s The Match has been a lot of fun to be a part of over the past few years and I’m excited to finally show off my skills on the course. Phil and I got this, I GUARR-AAAN-TEEEE.”
Don’t cry for Philly Mick, though. He’s going to win big time even if The Chuckster crashes and burns, which, let’s face it, is as inevitable as an uncontested Curry three.
Why is Lefty already smiling?
Because the course is owned by Mickelson Golf Properties and The Match III will give a national audience an up close look at Stone Canyon Golf Club.
If you found some sort of perverse enjoyment watching QB icon Tom Brady shank shots and painfully grimace in Match II, you’re gonna love watching Sir Charles chop up the golf course.
The golf superintendents will have a tough repair job after Barkley takes a machete (err, golf club) to their carpet-like turf.
Peyton showed he’s got some game in Match II and Curry, a scratch golfer, has teed it up in several professional tournaments.
Phil won his first two Champions Tour events (Dominion Energy Charity Classic and Ozarks National) and Charles is just lots of fun to watch. He doesn’t take himself too serious and he pretty much personifies every hacker/weekend golfer in the golf universe.
The competition format will be modified alternate-shot match play.
They’re loading up on the star power for analysts and on-the-course reporting with Gary “Bikini Waxed Greens” McCord and NBA Miami Heat star Andre “2015 NBA Finals MVP” Iguodala providing commentary and Eli “Won Two Super Bowls” Manning and Michelle “LPGA Star” Wie in the pre-show.
I enjoy these made-for-TV events because they’re really all about entertainment, not necessarily golf.
If Philly Mick, Sir Charles, Peyton and Steph are on their best wisecracking one-liner game, The Match III will be fun to watch.
If not, find a soft couch, enjoy a nice single malt and get ready for an epic afternoon snooze.
